White Like Us - Los Angeles Times

advertisement

. . .a brave new world in which we're all becoming minorities, and nobody's really sure who's going to have the last laugh.

This article preceded The Speech by Obama, and since then takes on a new context.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Lander is doing to whites what scores of journalists and politicians do to non-white minorities every day, "essentializing" complex identities -- that is, stripping away all variety and reducing them to their presumed authentic essences.

Here's the full list (so far) of Things White People Like.

Maybe it's just too West Coast, but how could he leave out "inheriting your folks' New Yorker subscription?"

Still, the list is fun; here's a sampling:

#67 Standing Still at Concerts
#66 Divorce
#65 Co-Ed Sports
#64 Recycling
#63 Expensive Sandwiches
#62 Knowing What's Best for Poor People

One more thing, this article is tagged satire not because it is, but because satire is it's subject, and I thought taggin about-satire was insufferably lame.
